UK Punk – How To Look Punk!
It’s a constant feature of the media that it demonstrates its two-facedness. Having spent a good week or so in late 1976 with lurid and outraged headlines over the Sex Pistols and the Bill Grundy Incident, some switched to focus on the emerging punk youth cult and gave a guide about how to look punk. The Sunday Mirror (December 12th) featured an article by Eve Pollard entitled ‘All Good Clean Punk – and dirt cheap, too.’
Despite this article, she did go on to achieve some firsts most notably first female editor on a number of newspapers. She’s also Claudia Winkleman’s mum.
About the article itself. It’s not the text that’s grating so much, but the frikkin photos with the smiley-gurning models who look like they’re off to some Etonian fancy dress party but claim to real punk fans! Compare the article to the US How To Look Punk guide of 1977 by Marliz.
Anyways, Eve gives her view of punk fashion in the final few sentences but admits she’s too old for it. “I think the unvarnished punk rock look is hideous, unflattering and the lowest ebb of fashion but then (alas!) I’m no longer a teenager.” Alas, indeed Eve!
