The Nashville – London
The Nashville Room West Kensington W14 – (and then just The Nashville) was one of the multitude of venues available to Punk bands. As per usual the Sex Pistols had trouble there as they hit the music weekly covers with an altercation between the band, followers, and audience. Punk was effectively banned following this, though its popularity and obvious draw for punters meant it could not be ignored for long, and soon it was a staple each week.
The Stranglers were to have had their first album as a live one from a recorded 1976 set there and called ‘Dead On Arrival’.
The Nashville, saw Pub rock, souped up R&B and then Punk reach its audience. Long gone venue.
“In earlier times the NASHVILLE ROOM where that what everybody is thinking of – A Place where you can hear and see COUNTRY Stars. When I first came to London in January 1971 my Tourist Guide of London told me : This is the place where you can see US Country Stars by the dozen!!
OK, my wife and me went to them rooms. Sitting at the bar of the Pub (separated from the concert room) and hearing a strange sound, because musicians in the other room had a sound check. I talked to the man behind the bar ” Hey man what kind of strange country music do we hear ? Who are the musicians? “. He smiled and said ” This is ARTHUR BROWNS KINGDOM COME”.
Sadly this Country Concert that night was sold out ! Later the Nashville Rooms where just called The NASHVILLE and it was the Mecca for the Punk Freaks of Europe- It was the Living Room of the Sex Pistols. My wife and me saw a lot of bands there. THE VIBRATORS, FISCHER Z, WAYNE COUNTY & Electric Chairs and The COUNT BISHOPS. All between 1978 and 1980. London Tube Station : West Kensington !”
