The Meffs 02 Birmingham 21.01.2025
Punk77: The Meffs first headline tour kicked off in Birmingham O2 Academy last night on a cold Wednesday. Having been warmed up by the excellent Carsick (who I need to check out more of), Lily and Lewis can still be seen setting up their equipment themselves and tuning up before heading off stage. No rockstar frills here beyond two small stools on either side of the stage.
The intro music is ‘Spitfire’ courtesy of fellow Essex band The Prodigy. The venue is small but the light show is immense; deep red and blue hues and some serious bright strobe effect lighting throughout kick off the band’s entrance and perfectly match the high tempo of the set.

They have a confidence now, built from repeated touring and gigging and are incredibly tight and dynamic. No surprise that the bulk of the set is made up from the excellent ‘What A Life’ album. Picks of course would be the excellent ‘Only Human’, ‘Stamp It Out’ and ‘What’ but the whole set was a joy. In addition there was a new track aired which sounded brilliant. ‘Modern’ is the title and was even played twice. It’s available to listen to on Bandcamp if you sign up for their newsletter (see below). They finished up with Broken Britain, Broken Brains which hasn’t stopped going round and round (sic) in my head.

The Meffs just put on a great gig; it’s high octane, visual, full of social comment but light-hearted enough to make you smile. Even the mosh pit that Lily opens up is all friendly and on stage, the repartee between Lewis and Lily works really well. What you get to appreciate though is just how good and how dynamic a guitarist Lily is given she handles, singing duties, being the focal point of the band covering every inch of the stage, and yet still firing out like bullets those punk riffs and runs out of her telecaster while doing some serious guitarist poses that just look so cool. BTW The stools are for her to stand on so people can see her. Lily even did some crowd surfing while jokingly saying it was a risk to the rest of the tour and ended with an out-of-tune guitar.

At the same time Lewis behind on the drums providing the backbeat and backing vocals is so integral and crucial to the whole sound and band vibe.
They’re so fucking likeable that they genuinely are surprised at having to do an encore as they round out a 75 minute full on set as they are generally a support act delivering a shortened set.
2025 will be touring and recording for a new album in 2026. Catch them now. God knows we need The Meffs in these strange times!
