Punk & The Media – Derek Nimmo
As with anything new, the media looks to either get cheap laughs, lampoon it or be so fascinated that they try it out. So check out this little oddity from the time!
Stereotypically British to the core, Derek Nimmo (on the left in picture right) was an actor who specialised in inoffensive light comedy, particularly well-meaning bumbling cleric roles.
Somehow he also managed to land a couple of his own chat shows, If It’s Saturday, It Must Be Nimmo (BBC, 1970) and Just a Nimmo (BBC, 1974-78).
In this clip from the BBC Archives Nimmo gets a complete punk makeover courtesy of Vivienne Westwood in Seditionaries, while bemused Sex Pistols Johnny Rotten, Sid Vicious and Steve Jones watch on. What will the public make of his new look? This clip is from Just A Nimmo, originally broadcast 24 March, 1977.
Some great shots of Seditionaries and folk and love the vox pop along the Kings Road.
