Flicks

Flicks was a London punk fanzine whose first issue was in January 1977 and was created by Glenn Marks, Jon Herlihy and various contributors. Only ran for only 4 issues

The second page sums up the zeitgeist and the fanzine.

During the first half of the seventies there wasn’t that much to grab anyone’s attention. Sure there have been moments of brilliance, certain events that still stick out in the mind – but it wasn’t until 1976 that this decade came into its own….the new wave has infused new life into the dying art of rock and roll. It’s given the now generation something to live for again. Something which we haven’t felt since god knows when. There’s no need anymore for critics to squabble over who should be the New Dylan, because there is no need for a New Dylan. The revolution is here – it’s what we do with it that counts.”

But what Flicks does that wins my admiration and places it as one of the best fanzines IMHO is it only goes and fucking bucks against the already established punk fanzine trends. It’s A5 to start with and its cover is generally plain – no pictures of the Sex Pistols and collages. Then there’s the content which is a fantastic mix of reviews, a poem by the legendary Jane Suck, band music reviews, a feminism piece and a couple of articles on Enid Blyton & Batman. Inside Toyah is namechecked as a contributor and also to feature in the next issue. The only feature without a name is the Blyton/Noddy one so that’s likely to be hers!

Editor Glen says of his zine in Virginia Boston’s book Punk Rock which featured among lots of punky other things, fanzines and quotes from their writers.

It’s not only concerned with music. New Wave goes much further. It involves us all. Age doesn’t mean a shit. No posing – punk rock does not mean razors, pins and more importantly swastikas. Flicks the title, the size, all to do with being a small booklet … keep flicking through. Glen
