CLT DRP York Crescent 08/04/2025 Review
I caught CLT DRP as support to the Lambrini Girls at York Crescent on 08/04/2025. I knew nothing about them before seeing them but what a nice surprise to come hear a band I hadn’t heard before do a great set.
CLT DRP is a three-piece Brighton band. They are also very unique and innovative, given it’s just drums, guitar and a singer. That’s the easy bit; now comes the hard bit: How the heck do you describe them?
Because the guitarist wields a bank of pedals larger than the computers that sent the space rocket to the moon in the 60s. Behind him is a rather delightful Laney 4 by 4 and a beautiful glowing orange valve Laney head that’s like an expensive giant hi-fi. OK that’s enough guitar porn, but that is a hell of a lot of hardware to be packing.
However, the reason why is immediately apparent. The sounds Scott comes out with are absolutely amazing, making the guitar sound like a synthesiser, drum beats, sequencer, scratching, dance, psychedelic, hip hop and punk and often in the same song. In short the guy is an absolute freaking genius on guitar.
However if it were just being a smart arse and lumping everything in, then you would soon get bored but it doesn’t work like that. The songs are innovative, clever and propelled by the solid, hyperactive drums of Daphne who works her/their ass off and in perfect time with Scott. On top of that is the buoyant singer Annie who delivers some thought provoking lyrics in a mixture of rap and singing punctuated by the appropriate ferocity.
Limp Biskit/nu metal (maybe Beastie Boys ‘Watch You Want ‘ is better) might be a curious thing to cite here, but CLT DRP’s riffs, codas and hooks are immense and precise and danceable/listenable to.
They are impossible to place and that in a world of homogeneity ain’t a bad thing. Check them out! I’d go again so they’ve got another convert 🙂 !
