Pennie Smith

Ahh the gorgeous Jill...In the Dec NME 78 she wrote "prejudice and bias are just as rampant in the music press as in other forms of journalism. In fact sometimes  when reading a feature where I was present , I don't recognise having been there at all" A  professional photographer, her live shots mix interesting angles and  perspectives that make us take a second look at something so apparently straightforward as the performer(s) on stage. Large selection of her photographs in 'Glue  - The Ultimate Punk Accessory' Working for Virgin was admitted to the inner sanctum of official photographers by Malcolm McC. Quickly became friends with Mr Rotten via a love of reggae. Dennis also contributed to the NME. He wanted his photography to be "pictures that make a statement without words." Covered the Pistols SPOTS tour  with straightforward live shots "I had no time to compose or even focus properly" as opposed to his sessions which often used darkness and shadow to atmospheric effect. Check out his photos in 'Rebel Rock - A Photographic Record Of The Sex Pistols.'                                                             Writing In NME December 1978 Pennie states "I take photographs. I am not in the rock business to perpetuate intentionally glossy images - the only thing that should do that is a mirror." Perhaps best known for her pictures of The Clash -  "they know that photography is not about presenting the best profile "  and she hit the nail on the head when she said "live pictures are basically luck plus a quick trigger finger."
