Punk 2009... Issue 13 - May 2009

Win, Win, Win

Ok so you may not be able to join the Punk77 bash in Bristol this Saturday at the Old Fox in St. Phillips, Bristol (only 5 minute walk from Temple Meads train station). 3p.m. till late & free entry on the door.

On the day, there will be various DJ's (spinning strictly 1970's punk). DJ's will be from Talkpunk forum, as well Bear Hackinbush (Lunatic fringe/Bugs & Drugs/Cum fame) & hopefully, a top name or two on the decks.

If all that isn't enough, we have, and we're delighted to announce this, we have, the one and only China Doll & Mr Atomic , who'll be bringing down their crafts to exhibit and to decorate the venue. hopefully they'll be able to fill you in more on what they have in store for you.

This will be complimented, by art/punk prints by Bear Hackinbush & friends. Bear is a well known face on the Bristol punk scene, and has been for many years now. We're delighted to have him on board!

And if all that is not enough, then we have a big screen, with various films & footage, from back in the 70's, lovingly compiled by Gram77.

Hope & Anchor

While clubs like the Roxy and Vortex  drove Punk rock forward in a club environment in London, it was pubs like the Hope and Anchor as part of the Pub circuit that gave fledgling punk bands a chance to play and hone their skills to new audiences. So many bands have played there; from 999 - Stranglers - X Ray Spex and in later years Madness and the Libertines to name just a few. A live double album in 1977 also captured the pub and the types of bands featured.

Quite simply the Hope & Anchor in London has been a major part as a venue in the evolution of Music throughout the years. And whereas so many pubs and music venues have sadly long gone the pub is still standing as a live venue. It's a major part of our history and we celebrate it.

Venues of Old

Take a trip back in time at the key London venues and clubs that hosted Punk gigs - from the Marquee to the Rainbow to the Vortex and including the Roundhouse, Hammersmith Odeon, Nashville and Dingwalls. Check off how many of these places are still left.

Eddie Duggan

One of the great things about doing the Roxy Club book was interviewing some great people and getting their stories.

This one is with Eddie Duggan who as you will read, was there at the beginning, saw some great gigs - Bowie, 100 Club Punk Festival, Roxy Club and took some great pictures. Here are his experiences and a genuine look into the punk times of the late Seventies.

The Pitiful

Yet ...another in our series of Roxy wannabees...this band were dumped from the live at the Roxy album for being to bad and hared the distinction of having an audition night with the Psychedelic Furs!!

Here the story of the band with a drummer who used to take toilet breaks mid song and their first singer who left the band because of stage fright. Brian Dennis speaks to singer Mark Tate and gets the lowdown on the band who at times featured members of the Slits and 101ers helping out.

The Duel

Tara and Andy kindly gave up their time to answer some questions about the last album and reaction to it, how the band was going and what did they think of their newie 'Childish Behaviour.' It's not a bad album so check out the videos and downloads and make your own mind up. They're also on tour now so check out their Myspace page to see if they're gonna be near you and if they are give them some support.

Vice Squad

No not Beki's gang, but a bunch of reprobates from oop North in sunny Doncaster Yorkshire. Unlike a lot of bands they made it to vinyl on the comp ‘New Wave from the Heart’ before chucking it all in. People sometimes forget there were whole Punk music scenes going on out of London and Manchester. This entry donated by Tony Beesley who coincidentally has a book telling about the Yorkshire scene. See below...

'Our Generation' is the unique and very first account of the Punk generation of Sheffield and the local region told by the author and over 150 different and varied voices of the era. From the pre - Punk days and all the way through the summer of hate of 1977 Punk and beyond, the story takes in the many classic gigs, the clothes worn and searches for Identity, the groups formed and broken, the fans, the records, the violence and laughs along with many photos, flyers, rare tickets and memorabilia of the era. The books main focal point is the Punk explosion and its effect on the local youth, but also takes in Mod revivalists, 2-tone fans, New Romantics and passing anecdotes from some of the many well known Punk groups who have played at famous local venues such as Doncaster Outlook, Sheffield Limit club, Rotherham Windmill and Sheffield Top rank. Meetings with some of the most noted Punk generation musicians such as Joe Strummer, Paul Weller and Sid Vicious are also refreshingly told by fans in their own words.

This story is about a time of euphoric excitement and life changing experiences when a proportion of our local youth cast caution to the wind and found themselves in the middle of the most explosive, controversial and influential musical revolution since pop music began...this is Sheffield's experience of that time...the story of 'Our Generation'

The book is 444 pages and full of many fantastic Rare and exclusive photographs from private collections, along with countless unique memories and experiences from those who were there at the time. Includes words from Charlie Harper (UK Subs), TV Smith (The Adverts), Jo Callis (The Rezillos) and many more musicians, fans, Punk Rockers, Mod Revivalists, New Romantics and Post-Punk fans. No corporations involved…this is a 'Do it yourself' Punk Rock production and the very first of its kind!
