The Bill Grundy Incident.

The result of the Sex Pistols spark was Siouxsie, Severin and Billy Idol starting to experiment musically. Billy with Tony James in Chelsea and Siouxsie auditioning unsuccessfully for various pub bands ( I wish I could have seen that). So they decided to put a band together for the 100 Club Festival. At the last moment Billy Idol dropped out leaving Marco Pirroni on guitar and Sid Vicious on drums. The rest as they say is history !

The single incident that involved the Bromley Contingent and the Pistols and which propelled the latter into the eye of the media hurricane was the Bill Grundy incident. You have to remember that UK TV had only two channels and was basically as squeaky clean as a christian fundamentalist's fundament. The band in all their finery were a little bored and in the back was Siouxsie, Severin, Simone and Simon Barker when the following happened.

Grundy: What about you girls behind ?

Glen: He's like your Dad in'he, this geezer, or your grandad ?
Grundy: Are you worried or just enjoying yourself.
Siouxsie: Enjoying myself.
Grundy: Are you?
Siouxsie: Yeah.
Grundy: Ah that's what I thought you were doing.
Siouxsie: I've always wanted to meet you.
Grundy: Did you really ?
Siouxsie: Yeah.
Grundy: We'll meet afterwards, shall we ? (Siouxsie makes a face)
Steve: You dirty sod. You dirty old man.
Grundy: Well keep going chief, keep going...Say something outrageous.
Steve: You dirty bastard.
Grundy: Go on, again.

Steve: You dirty f****ker !

Grundy: What a clever boy !
Steve: What a f***ing rotter ! (laughter from bands and fans)
As the end credits come up Lydon looks at his watch bored while Steve the rest bump and grind to the music.

From here on in things would never be the same for any of them especially the Pistols as the media circus took over.

And now that that they had their own bands how did the Bromley Contingent end up?

Billy Idol: "We used to go to Louise's (a gay club) and hang out together. We wanted to do things together so we could feel it growing. But later on it got bitchy. Everyone started getting their own bands, and it was wild how we started to slag each other off. At that time the scene had no name. Then Caroline Coon came up with the name punk."

Punk was up and running now. Billy Idol formed Generation X. Siouxsie and Severin continued with the Banshees. Soo Catwoman's underage flat chested double appeared in The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle and the rest carried on, dropped out or reappeared later like Steve Strange in the New Romantic movement fronting Visage.

Whatever happened to Soo Catwoman and Debbie ?

So now we know. Debbie went on the game and did porno shoots ( Men Only etc) well into the eighties and for all we know is still on the game ......

And Soo Catwoman faded out of the picture to become a mum !!!
